It has been said that the Internet has brought a rather vast world together through common interests. And true, chat rooms and IRCs, message boards and their ilk have all allowed individuals from every corner of the globe to communicate with one another, in real time, and for a fraction of the cost of phone conversations.
Through this facilitated communication the Internet provides, there have been a rise in numerous Internet games that individuals from across the globe can play. Internet pool and Internet poker are all quite popular. Even online variations of classic Parker Bros. games such as Sorry! and Monopoly have Internet versions available. And classic games such as checkers and backgammon have their loyal following. So, it is no surprise that Internet chess has become popular as well.
Internet chess is a modern version of the old chess by mail system of many years past. In ‘mail chess,’ two people, many miles apart from each other, would set up a chess board at their residences and mail each other their moves. You had to really be patient to play chess this way because it goes without saying that a chess game could take a long, long, long time to complete this way. It has been recorded that some of these play by mail games took years to complete. So, in a nutshell, Internet chess cuts that time span way down.
Today, Internet chess saves people from across the globe the postage stamps and allow them to play in real time. Now, a chess game may still take a long time to reach its conclusion, but Internet chess shaves a few MONTHS of the old play by mail version. In its own way, Internet chess has a way of making the world as smaller place as well, one chess piece at a time.
